Printing Terms
|
Western Graphics Workshop
has a glossary of terms related to print making. Anyone interested in selecting a print for purchase may want to go beyond
"I know what I like". To my mind lithography is a somewhat confusing category. An original lithograph is pulled directly
from the artist's drawing, unlike offset lithography.
A serigraph is a print produced by using a squeegee to force ink through a silk
screen onto the paper below.
Intaglio includes a wide range of techniques. Etchings are included in this
category.
Linoleum cuts pretty well describe the process, althought the results range from elementary school to Picasso.
As for numbered impressions, don't get too hung up on looking for a low number like 12/500. You are probably looking at a lithograph,
and the first impression should be no different from the last impression.

To learn more about the making of color lithographs, you should check the illustrated description of
Progressive Proofs.

Posters and Lithographs

For anyone on a limited budget, posters would seem to be a sensible option. Western Graphics has a
selection of posters.

Recently someone inquired about prices for Gorman lithographs. Western Graphics has an extensive
list of prices.
The website for the RC Gorman Navajo Gallery has excellent images of
"Vintage Gormans"
along with prices for the lithographs.
